How to Read a Canadian Supplement Label
Shopping for supplements in Canada is easier when you know what to check on the physical label. This guide explains a practical way to compare Natural Health Products (NHPs), including the product licence number, ingredients, serving directions and cautions.
Important: use the current physical package as the final reference for ingredients, directions and warnings. For individual health questions, speak with a qualified health professional.
1. Look for an NPN or DIN-HM
Health Canada says licensed natural health products can be identified by an eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN) or Homeopathic Medicine Number (DIN-HM) on the label. You can also verify licensed products in Health Canada’s database.

2. Check the medicinal ingredients and amount per serving
Do not compare two supplements only by bottle size or front-label claims. Check the complete medicinal ingredient list and the amount supplied per labelled serving. Products with similar names can have different strengths, ingredient forms or serving sizes.
3. Read the recommended use and directions
Check the recommended use, route of administration and labelled dose. Health Canada’s current labelling guidance says NHP labels include the recommended use, route and dose, along with other key product information.
4. Read cautions, warnings and possible adverse reactions
Review the cautionary statements, warnings, contraindications and possible adverse reactions shown on the package. This is particularly important when you use medications or other supplements.
5. Check non-medicinal ingredients and allergens
Read the complete non-medicinal ingredient list if you need to avoid a particular ingredient, sweetener, colour, flavouring or other component. Do not assume two flavours or formats have identical ingredient panels.
6. Compare serving size and package count
A larger bottle is not always the better value. Note the labelled serving size and total number of servings so you can compare products on a cost-per-serving basis.
Canadian supplement label checklist
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| NPN or DIN-HM | Helps identify a natural health product licensed for sale in Canada. |
| Medicinal ingredients | Shows the active ingredients and their labelled amounts. |
| Serving size / dose | Lets you compare equivalent servings rather than package size alone. |
| Non-medicinal ingredients | Useful when checking sweeteners, flavours and other components. |
| Cautions and warnings | Provides important conditions and restrictions for use. |
| Package count / weight | Needed for accurate value and cost-per-serving comparisons. |
Verify the product with Health Canada
Health Canada provides a Licensed Natural Health Products Database for checking licensed products. If you are unsure about a product, use the licence number from the package and verify it through Health Canada rather than relying only on advertising claims.
